Meet Michael

Favourite Discipline: Running

Favourite Food: I genuinely enjoy eating healthy food. But in terms of treats it’s got to be ice cream, closely followed by sticky toffee pudding (the two work well together!)

Favourite Quote: “Training is like fighting a gorilla. You don’t stop when you get tired, you stop when the gorilla gets tired”

Greatest Personal Achievement: Launching a fun family tri session at my local gym. Parents and children train alongside one another and everyone has a fantastic time.

Greatest Sporting Achievement: Race wins are great but the moment I always look back on is when I was on the relay team for the Northern Cross Country Championships and achieved a bronze medal. My run club is from a small town but that day we took on the big boys and did ourselves proud, being part of a team is special. The night out that followed was also huge.

Best Thing About Working For Challenge Tri Camp: The energy that people bring to the camp. Everyone is there to share a passion, train well and enjoy the sun and excellent training environment. The coffee is awesome too!

About Michael

I have raced triathlon at all distances, all over the world up to and including Ironman. Being from Bolton I sort of have to do the Ironman UK as it runs past my front door. Triathlon is my life, the training is a release from the pressures of the real world and I believe exercise can cure any illness. My attention has begun to move towards training others in recent years as being able to pass on knowledge to help someone learn or improve has a massive feel good factor. I get more involved in my athletes’ races than I do in my own! I have recently taken over as head coach at my club TriRivington and am one of the youngest head coaches in the country. One of my first projects was to introduce a junior section as I strongly believe that kids taking part in sport is an essential part of growing up. Plus, I love seeing them grow, improve and doing well!

What Athletes Say About Michael:

“I can’t believe the improvements to my swim in such a short space of time, thanks!”

Matt Tyrer, non-swimmer to sub 60 minute 3k open water swim in 3 months

“What an amazing day! We couldn’t have got here without your help and encouragement”

Tri-Rivington members

“Michael is more than a coach, he is an ally, motivator and friend. He knows how to adapt training to make it personal and work for you in a way that helps you be the best you can be”

Clare McKenna, World Mountain Race (Northern Ireland)
