Meet The St Albans Challenge Tri Camp Coaching Team

Nick…Originally a swimmer in his youth discovered triathlon while at university and quickly excelled to race at an Elite level.

I love triathlon; everything it involves and stands for. Challenging yourself to improve, manage your time to get training done and staying focused on your end goal. But ultimately enjoying doing what you love!  I started triathlon in 2001 with a novice race on a borrowed bike, falling off in transition and getting cramp on the run!  It didn’t put me off and it has been my passion ever since.  Many years on and I have been fortunate to win national titles and represent my country at multiply age group European and World championships – being crowned age group World Champion twice in both Sprint and Olympic distances. Since retiring from racing in 2013 to focus more on coaching I have again been fortunate to have worked with some great people from complete beginners to professionals. I’ve guide people to complete their first events, as well as coaching two athletes to age group world champion status in 2016.
Through working on our triathlon race tours and training camps I get to meet literally hundreds of triathletes every year at all levels and experiences which not only inspires me but also helps me to develop as a coach – no triathlete is the same so working with so many different ones opens your eyes to how different methods and approaches work for different people! Brent…began his sporting career as a runner before moving into triathlon, and hasn’t looked back since.

“I have competed in races of all distances all over the world including multiple Ironmen and 70.3s I also hold age group titles and have raced at both ITU World and ETU European level. I have previously coached and delivered training camps for Team GB Age Group triathletes working towards team selection as well as athletes looking to achieve more varied goals, such as becoming a first time Ironman finisher.

I have a natural empathy with Age Group athletes who are trying to balance the demands of our sport with a hectic work lifestyle and with limited amounts of time to train. Getting results is a key Challenge Tri Camp coaching principle so we work very closely with our athletes to prepare for the race season. As a qualified coach, and a British Triathlon Team Manger, I draw on lessons learnt and my experiences over two decades in running, multi-sports, cycling and swimming to help guide you to achieving your own personal triathlon goals, I look forward to working with you.

Kat…With a background in competitive swimming, Kat was tempted once to try open water swimming following her studies at university and despite her initial reservations fell in love with it, entering and winning her next triathlon. She had found her new sport!

I’m proud to have been part of the GB Age Group team every year since I started tri and won medals at Europeans and World races, but it’s not just about the results, I love the process of training, racing and setting a goal and working towards it.  Now as a coach I get to share my experiences and help others whether they are just starting out in the world of tri, or are an experienced athlete striving for the podium. Everyone has different goals, and creating a training plan that works for each individual, their lifestyle and their motivations is what drives me and pushes me to keep learning. Everybody is different and I love getting to know all my athletes, and helping them enjoy the process of achieving, and exceeding, their goals. More info on Kat here

Gavin….been doing triathlons since he was a kid without even realising it.  Though I guess it was just called mucking about with your mates back then. Back to the present, Gavin has completed Sprint, Olympic and Half Ironman distance races incorporating the experiences gained into coaching junior and adult athletes at different levels from beginner to Age Group for just over a decade.

A level 3 British Triathlon coach, Gavin has also completed the British Triathlon Kaizen coach development programme – currently the highest programme British Triathlon offers in the coaching pathway.  Gavin spent a good number of years developing his swim coaching before being hand picked by Swim Smooth to become one of a small number of fully certified Swim Smooth coaches in the UK.  There’s a lot that goes into getting that final nod to finally say that you are a proper certified Swim Smooth Coach!

“I love my job!  Being able to help people with their life goals and watching them develop into better athletes is what keeps me getting out of bed at stupid o’clock in the morning to get poolside coaching.  The achievements made with each individual and the smile you get at the end of it all is so worth it!”
